CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Jamie reached for the lever of Yvonne’s garage door, but Cookie stepped in and held an arm out.

“Allow me,” he said, giving Jamie a small nudge out of the way.

Before Cookie could bend down to lift the door, Yvonne waved him off. “There’s a button right here,” she said, pressing it. “I’d never get out of the house if I had to lift that thing up every day.”

The garage door opened, jerking and creaking.

“This place is a long-term rental, by the way. Guess I should call a handyman to fix that.”

As the door retreated into its slot atop the garage ceiling, Jamie’s eyes landed on the El Camino in all its shapely glory. The car wasn’t a shiny showpiece—basic black, tinted windows that suffered from heat bubbles at the edges, a little battered on the back end. The car had stories, possibly told over a beer for maximum effect.

At the sight of this stroke of Chevrolet’s genius, Cookie’s eyes lit up like those of a kid who’d been told he had his choice of any toy in the store. “Brings me back to my childhood,” he said, a forlorn look of affection on his face.

Jamie put a hand on his shoulder. “You’re going to have to get one of your own. This one belongs to someone. Someone we need to find.” She turned to Yvonne. “We don’t want to keep you, but I’d like to take a look in the car if that’s okay. You can go back inside, and we’ll let you know when we’re done.”

Yvonne hesitated. “I hope this is okay. Leah told me to just keep it here. I’m sure she had no idea I was going to take it out. She’s not in trouble, is she?”

Jamie glanced over at Cookie then said, “We hope not. That’s why her sister hired us. We just want to make sure she’s okay.”

Yvonne’s hands went to her mouth, her eyes widening. “I had no idea. I thought she just needed to go somewhere for a while.”

“And maybe she did,” Cookie said. “We don’t want to jump to any conclusions. Do you have a number for her?”

Yvonne replied, “I can give you the number I used to call for her to come over for housecleaning if that helps.”

“That would be great, thank you.”

Yvonne disappeared inside her house and returned with a set of keys and a scrap of paper, which she handed to Jamie.

“Thank you so much.”

Yvonne nodded. “I hope everything works out.” She looked at Cookie. “Nice to meet you,” she said before returning inside her home.

Cookie and Jamie stood in front of the El Camino, arms crossed as they studied the vehicle.

“What do you think?” Cookie asked.

“It’s a pretty distinct car, right? I mean, it’s not a Toyota that just blends into traffic in a nondescript way. So if she’s hiding, she’s going to need to get a different car.” Jamie checked the file on her phone. “This one’s license plate is different.”

“So she swapped it to keep
